Step 2: Uninstall Drive File Stream

Click Search Windows, and enter uninstall. Click Change or remove a program.
Programs and Features window appears. Select Google Drive File Stream and then click Uninstall/Change.

TSS started migrating to Google Drive in 2016, mainly to take advantage of many expanded features that Drive offers above and beyond what we could do with a Windows File Server (Network Files). Drive allows us to share and collaborate on documents with whomever we like, access those documents from anywhere (not just on a TSS campus), and use whatever device we want (phone, tablet, Mac) rather than being restricted to just a Windows PC.

That all being said, Drive still has drawbacks. It's cumbersome to move files around inside of deep folder structures. It's annoying to open non-Google formatted documents (like ActivInspire FlipCharts, Microsoft Publisher files, or Photoshop images), because you have to download them and then later re-upload them. It's also hard to work with media stored in Drive if you're trying to create a slideshow of photos or edit video files into a movie. There's also no easy way to create copies of template folders and their contents. What many of us really want is a Drive folder on our computer's desktop that behaves just like a Network file share, but that offers the collaboration and access that we get from Google Drive on the web.

Install Google Drive File Stream For Mac

Google has just released a new application that does this and it's called Drive File Stream. While it's still in the testing phase at time of writing, we've been offered early access to try it out. So far, it's performed very well for the early adopters who have been using it for the past couple weeks. This article will cover how to download, install, and use Drive File Stream. File Stream should not be confused with Drive Desktop Sync, a similar product that many of you have already installed. If you're already running Drive Desktop Sync, your can run File Stream alongside it.

Installing Drive Stream

1. Click on this link to download the Windows version of Drive File Stream. There's also a Mac version if you want to install it on a personal laptop.

2. After downloading the installer, it will show up in your Downloads folder. Double-click on it to run the installer.

3. The installer will spend a few minutes downloading files and installing them. After installation, you'll be prompted for your TSS Google account credentials:

4. You'll also have to agree to give File Stream a bunch of different permissions, which File Stream needs in order to work properly.

Introduction to Drive File Stream

Drive File Stream is an application that runs all the time when your computer is turned on. It's visible as a small square icon emblazoned with a triangular Drive logo in the System Tray, in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen:

If you open up a new Windows Explorer window and click on 'This PC' in the sidebar, you'll see Google Drive File Stream visible with the drive letter G: (har har)

If you open up Google Drive and start browsing around, it should look pretty familiar. Adobe lightroom descargar gratis mac. Every folder you can normally see in Google Drive will be visible inside Drive File Stream, along with their contents.

If you double-click on a file, it will open in the Windows default app. In the example below, if I double-click on an JPEG image file, it opens in the Windows photo viewer. If you double-click on a Google Doc, it will open a new tab in your default web browser to view the document.

Likewise, any changes you make to a Drive Stream folder will be synced to Google Drive. If you copy a PDF from your desktop into a Drive File Stream folder, that file will be copied up to Google Drive. If you delete a file or folder in File Stream, that file/folder will be disappear from Google Drive. This is important to remember: changes you make to your Drive File Stream will affect anyone else who has access to the same files in Google Drive. If you delete it in Drive File Stream, you delete it for EVERYONE.

Offline Access to Drive Files

Drive File Streams treats your Google Drive like a shared Windows Network Drive (like Network Files). Your documents and files are still being stored on Google's servers, NOT on your PC. This is the big difference between Drive File Stream and Drive Desktop Sync: Desktop Sync has to download copies of all the files, which makes it slow and also can take up tons of space on your computer's hard disk. Drive File Stream, by contrast, runs much more quickly because it's streaming your files from Google, not storing local copies of them. This is an important distinction because just like the Google Drive website, if you don't have an internet connection, Drive File Stream won't give you access to your documents.

If you need to make a file or folder available offline (maybe you're travelling and want to get some work done on the road), you do still have that option. If you right-click on a file or folder, you'll see a Drive File Stream option in the menu. If you hover over it, you'll get an option to make that file/folder available offline:

Who Should Install Drive File Stream?

It's actually easier to answer the reverse version of that question: who shouldn't install Drive File Stream? If you're feeling comfortable using Google Drive now, if you don't use applications like Publisher and ActivInspire, if you don't do a lot of travel for work..if this sounds like you, then you probably will be fine without using File Stream.

If, however, you're doing a lot of folder management and manipulation (Registration), if you're often working from the road (TLC Faculty), if you use ActivInspire (Journeys teachers), if you're using Microsoft Publisher frequently (Journeys PreK and FieldEd), then Drive File Stream will probably make your life easier. Also, if you're already using Drive Desktop Sync a lot, I definitely recommend switching to Drive File Stream, as it's better and easier in almost every way.

Google Drive File Stream is a desktop application that provides live access to your Google at IU My Drive content in the cloud through Windows Explorer and Mac Finder. With Google Drive File Stream, you can store, edit, and collaborate on files and folders associated with your Google at IU account without using up disk space on your computer.

You may use Google Drive File Stream to access protected health information (PHI) in Google at IU Secure Storage (coming soon), including in offline mode. Only mark files or folders for offline availability when you are directly working on them. Those files or folders must not be marked for offline availability when they are not being actively worked on.

Before you begin

Before you install Google Drive File Stream:

Confirm your device is capable of supporting Google Drive File Stream:
- Windows: You'll need Windows 7 or later, or Windows Server 2012 or later.
- Mac: You'll need El Capitan (10.11) or later. For High Sierra (10.13) or later, follow the steps at Use Drive File Stream on macOS High Sierra (10.13) or newer.
If you have Backup and Sync for Google Drive installed on your computer, UITS recommends uninstalling it. For instructions, see Stop syncing Google Drive files with Backup and Sync.

Install Google Drive File Stream

To install the Google Drive File Stream app:

Download the appropriate Google Drive File Stream app for your computer:
Open the .exe or .dmg file and follow the on-screen instructions.
During the installation process, you will be asked to make a change to your computer's settings to give Google Drive File Stream the appropriate permissions.
Once setup is complete, the Google Drive File Stream icon () will appear in the notification area of the Windows taskbar or in the Mac menu bar. Click the icon to launch the application, and then click Sign in.
If you don't see the Sign in button, click the gear icon () to open the Settings menu, then select Preferences, and click Sign-in on the 'Preferences' screen.
On the Google sign-in page, enter your Google at IU username (your_username@iu.edu). When you are redirected to IU Login, enter your IU username and passphrase.
Once you have successfully logged in, a drive named 'Google Drive File Stream' (in Windows Explorer) or 'Google Drive' (in macOS Finder) will appear on your computer. In it, you'll see a folder named My Drive, which provides access to your individual files and folders.
- To access shared files and folders (in Shared with me) via File Stream, create shortcuts to them in Google My Drive; see Access and create shortcuts to shared files and folders in Google at IU My Drive.
- You may also see a Shared Drives folder, if your team, department, school, or organization use Google at IU Shared Drives.
